Ichiko Aoba (青葉市子) is one of the newest additions to the Japanese music elite. Her brand of classical guitar mixed with dreamy, cavernous folk has managed to propel her to prominence not only in Japan, but in the whole East Asian region, as well as make some moves into capturing a western audience. Despite her debut album only coming out in 2010, she has grown to be one of the most acclaimed modern artists in Japan, and has caught the attention of the japanese music icons like Cornelius, Haruomi Hosono, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, who would all perform as her backing band for a live radio performance. Maybe you’ve heard her incredible Nujabes cover, or recall the strangely out of place folk number at the end of Ghost in the Shell: Arise which she made with Cornelius.
